Nonlocal flat optics

چکیده
In electromagnetics and photonics, ‘nonlocality’ refers to the phenomenon by which response/output of a material or system at certain point in space depends on input field across an extended region space. Although nonlocal effects associated wavevector/momentum dependence have often been neglected seen as nuisance context metasurfaces, emerging flat optics seeks exploit strong effective nonlocality enrich enhance their response. Here we summarize latest advances this field, focusing its fundamental principles various applications, from optical computing compression. Nonlocal transformation optics.
We show that the powerful framework of transformation optics may be exploited for engineering the nonlocal response of artificial electromagnetic materials. Relying on the form-invariant properties of coordinate-transformed Maxwell's equations in the spectral domain, we derive the general constitutive "blueprints" of transformation media yielding prescribed nonlocal field-manipulation effects a...
متن کاملFlat Electrowetting Optics
A new class of liquid electro-optics based on electrowetting is able to replicate the high performance of solid geometrical optics. Scaled-down electrowetting optics can be arrayed in order to achieve a flat and large area form factor. Techniques for applying electrowetting devices to light valves and arrayed microprisms are reviewed. Electrowetting light valves (ELVs) reconfigure the geometry ...
متن کاملReciprocity in nonlocal nano-optics
The principle of optical reciprocity is examined in the long wavelength limit in the presence of an isotropic nonlocal medium, by generalizing a previous result established in the literature on the symmetry of the Green’s function. Our focus here is in its possible application to plasmonics, i.e. optics with metallic nanostructures. It is shown that reciprocity will still hold as long as the di...
متن کاملFlat optics with designer metasurfaces.
Conventional optical components such as lenses, waveplates and holograms rely on light propagation over distances much larger than the wavelength to shape wavefronts. In this way substantial changes of the amplitude, phase or polarization of light waves are gradually accumulated along the optical path. This Review focuses on recent developments on flat, ultrathin optical components dubbed 'meta...
متن کاملNonlocal nonlinear optics in cold Rydberg gases.
We present an analytical theory for the nonlinear optical response of a strongly interacting Rydberg gas under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency. Simple formulas for the third-order optical susceptibility are derived and shown to be in excellent agreement with recent experiments. The obtained expressions reveal strong nonlinearities, which in addition are of highly nonlocal...
